What is MedGem Metabolic Test?
The test helps the nutritionists determine your daily caloric needs by calculating your resting metabolic rate (RMR). The test itself is simple and non-invasive. the MedGem Metabolic test entails breathing into a handheld device for approximately 10 minutes. The data gathered in turn helps the nutritionist calculate each individual's daily energy in vs. energy out. Calculating and managing the calories (energy) needed against the calories (energy) burned on a daily basis is paramount for optimizing wellness and fitness.

Why is the MedGem more accurate than other measures?
MedGem is not just a population based prediction of what the “average” person’s energy needs.  As we all know, everyone is an individual.  In order to figure out a more exact measurement, you need to measure oxygen consumption to determine caloric needs.  By measuring VO2, individual factors are taken into account as stress and injury can alter RMR , therefore, getting an accurate VO2 reading will show take into account all variables.

What is a Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)?
Your resting metabolic rate represents the amount of calories needed for maintaining body functions. In simpler terms it is the amount of calories your body would need if awake, but in a resting state all day. MedGem by HealtheTech is the device we use; it's a handheld, noninvasive calorimeter that determines a person's calorie needs. This machine can account for 75-100% of a person's total daily calorie expenditure.

Why is your resting metabolic rate unique from other people?
Everyone has a different genetic makeup which plays a role in how fast their metabolism goes.  Different factors such as body mass, body composition, age, gender, and hormones can all have an effect on your metabolism rate.  Other factors such as burns, fever, or illness can also alter your metabolism.

Why get your RMR tested?
Underfeeding as well as overfeeding can cause your body to get out of balance and lead to other problems that are undesired.  Knowing what your resting metabolic rate is a good way to live a healthier lifestyle and be able to give the body what it needs in terms of energy.  Most people think they need more calories than they do and this machine will help clarify any misgivings.

Who should use a nutrition and wellness counselor?
Anyone who is looking for education and guidance on nutrition and their lifestyle. People with specific dietary concerns such as gastrointestinal issues, food intolerance's, or weight management are perfect candidates for a nutritional and wellness counselor. If you are looking for ways to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, having some guidance can make all the difference in the world. Recreational to competitive athletes can always use some guidance in their nutrition, as sports nutrition plays a huge role in your performance. The bottom line is that anyone with nutritional, fitness and wellness thoughts, can and should see a nurtition and wellness counselor.
